Prototype: The Churchill was a versatile tank design that leant itself for other purposes, such as a bridge carrier, ramp carrier, armored recovery vehicle, flamethrower, and artillery carrier. One of the more interesting Churchill adaptations was the Armored Vehicle Royal Engineers or the Churchill AVRE. It was designed as a combat vehicle for the Royal Engineers that was armed with a Petard, a 290 mm spigot mortar that fired a 40 pound high explosive demolition bomb at a range of 90 m. The AVRE, one of “Hobart’s Funnies”, was first used on D-Day against hardened fortifications such as pill boxes and bunkers. AVREs could also carry reels of Bobbin canvas tarps for creating a firm surface for armored vehicles to drive upon on a beach, portable bridges, ploughs for unearthing mines, and fascines for crossing trenches. Royal Engineers used Churchill AVREs until the end of the war and over 700 were produced.
PLEASE NOTE: These models are all handmade and painted which makes every one unique. This means the paint patterns may vary a little and the detail parts like sandbags, turret tracks, antennas, etc. may also be arranged differently. This was also the case in real life. These models are very prototypical.
