Prototype: Beginning in 1937 the Wehrmacht acquired a series of 8-wheeled armored cars known as Schwerer Panzerspähwagen, or heavy armored reconnaissance vehicles. After experience with 4-wheeled and 6-wheeled armored cars, it was determined that an 8-wheeled vehicle would have better off-road capabilities. These vehicles had two drivers with wheels and independent steering at the front and the back, giving them a high degree of maneuverability. The larger chassis was able to accommodate a larger V8 engine and these armored cars could achieve a maximum road speed of 53 mph. Armor protection was deemed sufficient for defending the car’s crew against small arms fire. The Sd Kfz 263 8-Rad Funkspähwagen (radio reconnaissance vehicle) was a 231 8-Rad mounted with a large long-range radio aerial and was equipped with an extra-long-range radio and radio operator. The turret was fixed-mounted and the car was armed with a single MG 34 machine gun.
